I love retablos, have one at home from Malinalco.

 

Beyond their candid and colorful graphic beauty, the requests they portray are many times gloomy, anxiety-driven, at the same hilarious, perverse, egotistical, manipulative. Dispelling the curse is their real objective, more than thanking God and the Virgin for pulling strings to end it. By letting us know the curse so vividly, there’s also a premonition of recurrence. I love the ones where love is recovered from within the ground-zero of infidelity. I love the bad spelling, the crooked writing

 

Important Information

•    Medium:  Any medium is acceptable except thin paper.  Submissions should be no larger than 18” x 22”.  Be creative; use photographs, shadow boxes, bottle caps: make collages or mosaics.  Have fun!
•    Theme:  A religious theme is not required, submissions may illustrate a story, be humorous, but must not insult any deity of any religion or be obscene.
•    Publicity: Participants must send a photograph of the artist and a biography for publication on the Mexican Cultural Institute’s website and for publicity for the event.
•    Donations: The Mexican Cultural Institute is a 501-C organization and the artist will be given a receipt for the sale price or a reasonable estimate of its value.

Terms:  All donated artworks are subject to the terms of the auction set by Food is Arte.  Food is Arte retains the right to photograph or use the image for publicity or exhibition promotion.
Final bids are binding.  Upon successful sale, the donated art becomes the sole property of Food is Arte for transfer to the successful bidder.  If the donated artwork does not sell for the minimum bid amount, it will be returned to the artist.  The artist is responsible for delivery, insurance, and pick-up (in the event of unsuccessful auction) if applicable.
